Disrupting the paradigm, and shifting the perspective of Algarvian wine, at Morgado do Quintão, we are bold in placing importance on what once was, and what should be.

AWARD WINNING WINE

Since our first vintage in 2016, we have been recognised for pushing boundaries in a new era for Algarvian wine. From 2,000 to 20,000 bottles, along the way we have received the Revista de Vinhos award for ‘Best Wine in Portugal - Algarve’ for two years running, breaking glass ceilings in the recognition of wine from the Algarve. As one of the first vineyards in the Algarve to export to the US, we are also proud to have our grapes represented in 3-star Michelin restaurants around the world.

THE HISTORY

Responding to a certain calling from the old vineyards, we are committed to bringing winemaking back to the region where it all began.

RECLAIMING THE SOIL

The Algarve is a place where vine cultivation has a little known yet clear and concise history, for this is where the Tartessians are believed to have been the first to plant vines on the Iberian Peninsula, before later, in around 2000 BC, the Phoenicians brought with them grape varieties and winemaking techniques, many of which we attempt to protect, understand and spotlight today on the estate.

THE FIRST VINES

In the early 1800s, our ancestor, the Count of Silves, Francisco Manuel Pereira Caldas, founded Morgado do Quintão and planted the first of his vines in our red soil. After he produced the first harvest, our forefathers built on his legacy to grow what are some of the oldest vines in the Algarve and ones which, today, we are reviving to provide the indigenous grapes like Negra Mole and Crato Branco', grapes that make up our award-winning wines.

CONNECTING TRADITION WITH TODAY

By being creative with our bottle labels, to how we harvest and process our crop, we are strongly inspired to protect our history yet also to open up how we experiment with and cultivate our grapes. Playing with low intervention, chemical-free, organic methods we bring a contemporary spirit to our estate and work to protect our rich and diverse environment.

INDIGENOUS GRAPES

From our research on the estate about wine made here many years ago, we understand that Palhete and Clarete are the truest examples of historical winemaking in the Algarve and that they are some of the clearest representatives of the Algarvian profile, thus what is the future of wine in our region.

Our philosophy as “The Algarve’s Landmark Vineyard” is due to our commitment to the heritage of the region, to which we add our winemaker, Joana Maçanita’s, motto of “less man, more land” in our practice and winemaking techniques.

Savouring innovation and collaboration, we believe that through a convergence of creativity, we can contribute to a more purposeful path.

THE MAKERS

While today the vines are ours, we don’t think of their offering as our own. They are here for all those who partake in our rituals. Gathering a dynamic and innovative team of winemakers and hands that have graced the estate since our inception, and in some cases, much longer, is all part of that commitment to community. We are led by our winemaker Joana Maçanita, a leading figurehead of female representation in the industry and one of Portugal’s most innovative and well-renowned vintners.
